Diversity and inclusion “check-up” to measure the health of your organizational culture

Following the Black Lives Matter outcry for justice of Ahmaud Arbery, Breonna Taylor and George Floyd, many companies took to social media and other platforms to pledge their commitment to diversity and racial equality. Unfortunately, some of those pledges were met with criticisms from past and current BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, People of Color) employees sharing very different truths about their experiences. This resulted in a wave of resignations as racially biased organizational cultures were brought into the public eye. Notable resignations included Christine Barbarich, Co-Founder of Refinary29, Adam Rapoport, Editor-in-Chief at Bon Appétit, and Adidas’s Head of Global Human Resources, Karen Parkin. Their statements came across opportunistic and inauthentic.

The issue was that these companies were touting organizational cultures that didn’t exist. Many organizational leaders know and understand the benefits of a diverse workplace, but sometimes the foundations to foster that type of workplace aren’t present.

We created a brief list of questions to help organizations “check-up” on the health of their diversity and inclusion.

Whether you have answered ‘Yes’ or ‘No’ to most of these questions, an active diversity and inclusion program requires constant encouragement. But, it’s never too late to get started.
